The Story
Following a two year renovation effort, this iconic property has been fully restored and is now available to the community in the charming Czech town of West, Texas.
This historic home, constructed in ~1910 by Dr. A. L. Wilie and his wife Tennie, holds a rich history within the community. The property came into our family when it was purchased by Dr. GL Montgomery in the late 1930’s - early 1940’s. During the earlier years, the house served as a doctors office where Montgomery and other local Doctors practiced. However, the house has mostly been a memory of a vacant, dilapidated property. Once passed, Dr. Montgomery’s children inherited the property, Wendell (WO) and Hazel Montgomery. Wendell went on to become a successful business man in the community. His most notable venture being the Village Bakery where he and his wife Georgie baked delicious kolache’s and treats for all to enjoy. The house was eventually gifted to Wendell’s daughter Mary Elizabeth (Mimi).
Around the turn of the century the house underwent a renovation led by Wendell for his daughter. Mimi, being an avid world traveler and having an appreciation for the arts, had planned to decorate the house with pieces from all over the world as well as doctor’s equipment utilized by her grandfather. Unfortunately, the project was cut short due to budgetary and design concerns and the house has sat vacant since.
Mimi’s had plans to finished the project that her and her father had started so many years ago. Tragically, Mimi was never able to see her vision through due to her unexpected death in 2018.
With the remainder of the family’s permission, we purchased the house from her estate early 2021. Mimi was a cornerstone of the community and friend to all. We wanted to honor her memory by restoring the property to share with the community for years to come.
The Restoration Effort
Being over 110 years old the restoration was meticulous, and care was taken at every turn. During the 2 year renovation effort, we targeted a balance of modern amenities fused with the traditional craftsmanship to honor the history of the house while being able to enjoy comfortably what is now affectionately known as "The Village House."
